to the Environmental Public Health Resource Hub for Alberta First Nations


Environmental public health helps protect and promote the health of individuals and communities by addressing environmental factors that can affect health and safety. This webpage provides curated information and resources for health centre and community staff, facility operators, leadership, and the general public in First Nations communities in Alberta. Resources are organized by environmental public health service area and may include general and health information, surveillance and monitoring resources, prevention and preparedness guidance, response and management tools, training materials, and topic-specific resources.

What is Environmental Public Health Services?
 

Environmental Public Health Services delivered by Environmental Public Health Officers (EPHOs) are provided to First Nations to ensure public health and safety in their communities. EPHOs are certified through a national professional association, the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).

Services cover the following areas:

  • Drinking and Recreational Water Quality                  
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
  • Environmental Communicable Disease Control
  • Food Safety
  • Health and Housing
  • Public Facilities
  • Solid Waste
  • Wastewater

Environmental Public Health Officers work collaboratively with First Nations Health Centres and Leadership to deliver these services through pre-planning consultations, reviewing plans, inspecting, investigating, sampling, testing, training, providing technical advice and recommending corrective actions.

DRINKING AND RECREATIONAL WATER QUALITY

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE

Climate and weather related emergencies, including extreme weather events, flooding, wildfires, and poor air quality, can impact community health and safety. This section provides resources to support First Nations communities in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from these events.

Environmental communicable diseases are illnesses that can spread through animals, insects, contaminated food or water, or other environmental exposures. This section provides information on common diseases, prevention measures, and public health resources.

FOOD SAFETY

Food safety helps prevent illness caused by inappropriately handled food and supports the health of individuals and communities. This section provides information and resources on safe food handling, foodborne illness prevention, community events, traditional foods, and food safety training.

HEALTH AND HOUSING

Housing conditions can affect health, safety, and well-being. This section provides information and resources on common environmental health hazards in and around the home, including indoor air quality, pests, fire safety, and cleanup after environmental incidents.

PUBLIC FACILITIES

MAXIMISE
This section provides information and resources to support the safe operation and maintenance of public facilities, including child care centres, adult care facilities, and recreational spaces. Resources cover health and safety practices, cleaning and sanitation, and facility management. Additionally within this section are outbreak prevention and management resources to help prevent, identify, and manage communicable disease outbreaks in public facilities. Resources include infection prevention practices, cleaning and disinfection guidance, outbreak management tools, and facility-specific guidance for child care centres, schools, and adult care facilities.
